The College Essay: That Odd Beast

 

  • My clients have been accepted at Barnard, Duke, Davidson, American University, Howard University, Washington University, UNC-Chapel Hill, Dickinson, Lafayette, Boston University, and others.

  • Are you confused (or enraged) at being ask to reduce your life to 650 words?

    Did you ace the common app essay only to discover that your college of choice has a host of confusing supplemental questions?

    Don’t panic and don’t berate yourself. The college essay is a strange beast. I am here to help, but not to make crazy promises or write it for you. Clients work with me because I am affordable, experienced, and calm. I know how to help you write your best.

  • I always work on a sliding scale and charge by the hour. There is no package you have to buy. I’ve never failed to get an essay out of a student. If I fail with you, all the work is free.

    I work with students from the United States, Saudi Arabia, and Europe. All meetings are on ZOOM or WhatsApp.

    College applications are often a family project with many people giving advice. My only role is to help you find the best story that shows who you are.

Because Every Writer Needs Help Sometimes

 

  • I’ve been a working writer for over 20 years and in that time I’ve had many editors and teachers, both good and bad. I’ve taught creative writing to both undergrad and graduate students.

    I’ve been on faculty at several low residency MFA programs and the model I use with clients was forged there. We work together to develop ideas and strategies to build your strengths and strengthen your weakness. I tailor my comments and ideas to your work and your writing. My goal is for you to have more tools once we stop working together. It’s your literary voice and your story. I am here to make it your best version, but still yours. A lot of editors (and I’ve had them) will want to make your writing different. I only help you to make it better.

  • I have sliding scale, depending on scope of the project and your budget. If you send me 3-7 pages and a summary, you will receive, free of charge, a sample line edit and response letter and we can both decide if we are a good fit. If it’s not work I can do well (I don’t work with porn writers – no judgment, just not in my wheelhouse) I will let you know and help you find a better editor.

  • I charge by the hour and am scrupulously fair. If your novel is 600 pages and I see on page 170 that it shouldn’t be that long and I can read the last 30 pages to figure out what matters to you, I’m not going to read the whole thing and then charge you for all that time. I’m really good at my job and I’m stringently fair.
